What is the name of your group? In addition, how did your group get its name?
Blank Canvas is our name. It’s actually kind of a funny story as to how we got or name. We had been asked to do a performance for one of the events on campus, so we had to decide on a name. No one could come up with a good name, and really the only person who suggested a name was Brandon Worthington, and he suggested Blank Canvas. Everyone shot him down, but as the performance was coming up, we still didn’t have a name, so we really went with Blank Canvas by default.
What is the history of your group? In addition, why did your group form?
A couple of the people here at VCU had been dreaming of making a crew but it never really came into fruition at first. Over the years, a couple of us meet at some workshops in the area. We ended up meeting again at the KODACHROME workshops. When we realized we all went to VCU we started meeting up on campus and practicing the choreography from the workshops and ended up teaching each other our own pieces. We wanted to create an environment where people could come learn from each other and just have fun without any of the stress of auditions, being cut, so on and so forth. Eventually it grew and we decided to host weekly workshops.
What is your group’s hometown?
What do you feel are your group’s greatest accomplishments to date?
We feel like our greatest accomplishment is the welcoming environment we have created. We felt like many other crews lacked that kind of atmosphere and so far we have been able to maintain that and help people discover a love for dance, or rediscover the love for it that they once had.
Why does your group continue to dance?
We never stop learning new things, and it’s the fact that we can share that with others and just have fun dancing that we keep doing what we love to do: dance.
Why should the others support your group?
We just want to spread a love of dance, build a community where dancers can grow, share ideas, concepts, music, new moves and choreography. We accept anyone and everyone. If you support us, we will help and support you too.
