What is the name of your group? In addition, how did your group get its name?
The name of our group is Capital Funk. The way it came to be is actually a pretty funny, yet simple story. When the group of dancers that is now Capital Funk first started in 2004, they were called “Mezmerize.” After having received some flack for how silly of a name it Mezmerize is, we figure Capital Funk was not only a cool, yet fun name to call ourselves, but also regionally approporiate considering our home in the nation’s capital.

What is the history of your group? In addition, why did your group form?
Founded in the Spring of 2004 at The George Washington University, Capital Funk was created to compete in BustAGroove 2004. Since then, we’ve expanded to local fundraiser shows, university events, and various other East coast competitions. Our team is family and we support each other’s endeavors both inside of practice and out. CFunk is committed to spreading the love of dance in the DC/MD/VA area (as well as other areas when we get the opportunity)!

What is your group’s hometown?
Washington, D.C.

What do you feel are your group’s greatest accomplishments to date?
As a dance team, some of our great accomplishments are our 1st place finish at the East Coast Dance Competition in 2007, our 3rd place finish at Prelude East Coast in 3008, our 2nd place finish at Main Event 2009, and our 1st place finish at Main Event 2010. However, our greatest accomplishment is really staying true to our style and who we are. We work hard to cultivate a sense of family within our team so that we may not only be inspired by the dancers around us, but also ourselves.

Why does your group continue to dance?
Capital Funk continues to dance to celebrate the art form that it is and the diversity, creativity, and sense of unity it cultivates. Dance is what brought us all together and dance is what continues to keep us together.

Why should the others support your group?
CFunk is committed to spreading the love of dance in and around the DC/MD/VA area (as well as other areas when we get the opportunity). We strive to use dance as an art form but also as a vehicle to embrace diversity and all that it gives us.
